  1. WELCOME TO WINGUARD !!!

  3. INTRODUCTION TO WINGUARD
  4.  
  5. WinGuard can protect a personal computer running Windows 3.1
  6. from having any of its Program Manager groups or items
  7. rearranged or damaged (accidentally or intentionally).  These
  8. protections would probably be the most useful to someone who is
  9. in charge of a number of computers at a school or business,
  10. though a parent might wish to prevent little fingers on a mouse
  11. from dragging all of the Program Manager icons into a (not so)
  12. nice "happy face"!
  13.  
  14. WinGuard provides for the automatic setting of any one of seven
  15. different protection levels (actually, eight, including a "zero
  16. protection" setting), as well as allowing the hiding of
  17. "sensitive" programs, such as Windows Setup, Control Panel, or
  18. File Manager, behind its password-protected shell.  WinGuard
  19. also allows the hiding of selected Program Manager groups and
  20. Control Panel icons, restricting access to them to the
  21. authorized user only.

  23. Thus, it can be seen that WinGuard enables the authorized user
  24. to configure the Program Manager interface to allow the guest
  25. user easy access to selected applications, while minimizing the
  26. chances of damage (accidental or intentional) to Windows and the
  27. programs accessible through it.

  29. WINGUARD INSTALLATION
  30.  
  31. NOTE:  WinGuard requires the file VBRUN300.DLL to run.  While
  32. vbrun300.dll IS provided on the WinGuard program disk, it is NOT
  33. routinely distributed with the compressed version of WinGuard
  34. (winguard.zip) that is carried on bulletin board systems.  If
  35. you have obtained this shareware copy of WinGuard from an on-
  36. line service, you also will need to have a copy of vbrun300.dll
  37. installed in either the Windows directory or the Windows System
  38. directory.  If you do not have a copy of vbrun300.dll, you can
  39. probably download one from the same BBS from which you obtained
  40. winguard.zip.  You may also obtain a copy of vbrun300.dll from
  41. Cetus Software (P.O. Box 700, Carver, Mass. 02330) for a nominal
  42. cost ($5.00, postpaid).

  44. To install WinGuard, please run the WinGuard installation
  45. program, install.exe (probably located on the same disk or in
  46. the same directory as the file you are now reading).
  47.  
  48. To most easily run WinGuard's install.exe, you may double-click
  49. on its icon in File Manager.  You may also click on Program
  50. Manager's File Menu, click on the Run command (in the File
  51. Menu), type a:\install (or b:\install, or whatever the path to
  52. install.exe is), and then hit Enter.
  53.  
  54. Once the installation program is running, follow along as it
  55. detects the installation source location, the path to the
  56. Windows directory (typically c:\windows), and the path to the
  57. Windows System directory (typically c:\windows\system),
  58. confirming (or correcting) each path.  When install.exe asks if
  59. you wish to create a WinGuard group in Program Manager
  60. (strongly recommended), you should probably answer "Yes", as
  61. that is the easiest way to become familiar with all of
  62. WinGuard's features.

  64. You should read the full winguard.wri file (not copied to the
  65. hard disk for security reasons), or at least the abbreviated
  66. winguard.txt file, to find out about using WinGuard.  You may
  67. also start running winguard.exe and then (after entering the
  68. correct password) explore its on-line help file (accessible
  69. from WinGuard's Help menus, or by using the F1 key, or by
  70. clicking with the right mouse button on any of the buttons in
  71. WinGuard's Main Window).

  73. UPGRADING TO VERSION 2
  74.  
  75. If you are upgrading to WinGuard Version 2, the installation
  76. program will remove the previous WinGuard files before 
  77. installing the new ones.  You should find that the previous
  78. protection level setting is still in place, but not the
  79. password;  you will have to change the password from V.2's
  80. default installation password of "shield" to one of your own
  81. choosing.

  83. Please note that the V.1 icon you may have installed may need
  84. to have its properties edited, in order to reflect the location
  85. of V.2's .exe file (either the Windows directory on a networked
  86. computer, or the Windows System directory on an individual PC).

  88. Even if you are familiar with WinGuard's protection level
  89. settings (which are the same as in V.1), you should at least
  90. read the whatsnew.txt file, to find out a little about WinGuard
  91. V.2's new features.
